Need

Omnitracs is an industry leader in fleet management systems and software.  They were creating the next generation of their Mobile Computing Platform (MPC), a device in a truck that tracked the trip. The team visited a regional operations center for one of their clients.  They wanted to talk with truckers about their experiences with previous devices, and get feedback on the next generation device.  Ucentric wrote the surveys, conducted some of the interviews, and analyzed the data.

When we took all of this data back to the design team, no one argued about the usability issues captured in photos.  We immediately discussed improvements.

Contextual Feedback

We sat with truckers in their cabs to see how they used their current equipment.  We observed what worked well and where truckers had problems.  We got feedback that would not come up in a lab.  We also mounted our prototype to see how they would interact with the new design.

User Preferences

We showed users several design variations of the new device.  Truckers were able to give feedback on the pro’s and con’s of each design.  We could take the best elements of each as we refined our prototype.

Pain Point Analysis

We conducted short surveys with a several dozen truckers to augment the longer cab visits.  They discussed the pro’s and con’s of devices by Omnitracs and their competitors.  We also learned about their mobile habits and experiences, so we could assess the interest and needs in a mobile phone app.
